The Ile de Ré, a little corner of paradise floating in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of La Rochelle, is best explored on foot or by bike.
A varied landscape and a multitude of treasures are awaiting you on the ever-surprising island fondly known as “Ré la blanche” or “The White Island”: fine-sand beaches, salt marshes where egrets dwell and samphire grows, pine and fern forests, vineyards and oyster farms.
But you only need to stroll along its harbour quays and through the little lanes of its villages, characteristically abloom with hollyhocks, to really appreciate the island’s unique identity.
